1 [ Creed, Cary ] ; Thomas Herbert, 8th Earl of Pembroke The Marble Antiquities of The Right Honourable, the Earl of Pembroke at Wilton House. Privately Printed 1731
Privately Printed 1731 Gilt-decorated Morocco Very Good
74 etchings + 4 from another work. Lacks the introductory leaf. Usually this work has 70 plates, but this copy also has the 4 supplementary plates numbered 71 - 74 that are seen in Sheffield University's copy. According to BL "74 plates now because here are the 4 last statues which were thought to have been done by the another, those who have only 70 may also add these." OCLC lists four UK copies. The BL has two, one with 40 pl. and one with 70 pl. Sheffield University has a copy with 74 pl. as does Cambridge. The Blackmer copy had 74 plates ( Blackmer 426 ). Lowndes mentions that the work was published at 35s., and two copies selling at 2l. 15s. and 6l. 6s. J. Powell in ink on the f.f.e.p., as well as J. Powell, Swindon, Wilts. in a purple pencil in a large hand on the front pastedown. The bookplate of Elijah Impey upside down on the rear pastedown. All edges gilt, a lovely plum morocco binding, circa 1830, with a swirly outline design to the boards including urns and lyres, and what looks like birds plucking fruit from the urns, and a suspended lamp at the top. There is then a border of 9 lines, 7 thin, and two thicker. Gilt line to the edge, and inner dentelle gilt lines and border. The spine just has the title 'Plates' (there was no text), and filled in compartments surrounded by lines. A lovely and very scarce item, amongst one of the earliest illustrated records of a private collection. 102a
