Cahn, Walter Romanesque Manuscripts (A Survey of Manuscripts Illuminated in France Ser.) (Two volumes) London, United Kingdom Harvey Miller Publishers 1996 1872501605 / 9781872501604 Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine Two volumes, pp 48 + 374 plates; pp 218 . covers the very large body of material that survives from the intensely creative Romanesque period; in his selection Professor Cahn discusses not only the high points of the illuminator's art, but has been specially concerned to exemplify the range and variety produced in the 12th- century. Indeed this manuscript art was applied not only to the lavish and precious liturgical books of which the great Bibles are examples, but also to lives of saints, illustrated cartularies and books of canon law, as well as literary and historical writings. The principal focus is on paintings with an iconographical content, but equal attention is given to the pattern and decoration with which the manuscripts are embellished. The catalogue gives detailed information about format, style, contents, provenance and literature for each manuscript, and should be useful for the descriptions of the artists and scribes (some paid, itinerant and becoming increasingly professional) who were of exceptional calibre. The author has analysed the types and styles of work they undertook; and though patronage was largely ecclesiastical, secular commissions are also described. This catalogue of 152 manuscripts, with its introductory text and corpus of illustrations, provides a survey of book illumination of the period. 33c Price:
