1 Ross, Robert Masques and Phrases
London A.L. Humphries 1909 First Edition Cloth Very Good Presentation from the Author
315 pp, some foxing to pages and marks to front board signed by Robert Ross. Ross was Wilde's literary executor, and quite possibly the love of the love of his life, being reputed to be Wilde's first male lover in London, and remaining a lifelong friend. He was openly homosexual, and as a result of his faithfulness to Wilde, even in death, Ross was vindictively pursued by Lord Alfred Douglas, who repeatedly attempted to have him arrested and tried for homosexual conduct. Ross was also a mentor to Wilfred Owen and Seigfeid Sassoon. In early 1918, during the German Spring Offensive, Noel Pemberton Billing, a right-wing M.P., published an article entitled The Cult of the Clitoris, in which he accused members of Ross's circle of being at the centre of 47,000 homosexual traitors who were betraying the nation to the Germans. Maud Allan, an actress who had played Wilde's Salome in a performance organised by Ross, was named as a member of the "cult". She unsuccessfully sued Billing for libel, causing a national sensation. The incident brought much embarrassing attention to Ross and his associates. ( We also current have in stock Maud Allen's copy of the Frank Harris biography of Wilde, presented to Allan by Harris.)
